Obituary for Jemima Swanson "Mamie" Gillies (Sutherland)

GILLIES -- Jemina Swanson. “Maimie" (nee Sutherland)
At Telfer Place, Paris on Saturday December 12, 2015; of Paris, in her 91st year; Beloved wife of the late Larry (2010); mother of Barry Gillies of Chile; grandmother of Rob and Kylene Gillies; and sister in law of the late Marj Peacock and Doris Rutherford.
Maimie was born Jan.23 1925 on the fourth concession, northwest of Paris. She was the only child of George Sutherland and Georgina Oman originally of Caithness, Scotland. She attended Paris Plains public school, Paris High School and graduated from the University of Western Ontario in London in 1947. At age of eighteen, Maimie was in charge of her first multigrade public school class, younger than some of the students and half their size. Her first posting in Paris was at Queen's Ward public school.
Sadly, by genetic misfortune, she was struck with retinitis pigmentosa in her late thirties and was completely sightless within 3 years. This ended a blossoming teaching career. Undaunted, she started tutoring children needing academic touchups or with learning disabilities in all subjects from grades 1-12. Dozens of children passed through her basement classroom until her retirement in the early nineties.
In June 2004, Maimie and Larry left their country home for Telfer Place where she spent the rest of her years.
Maimie is kindly remembered by Gayle Gillies, her nephew Bill Peacock (Gaby) and cousin Carole Attlebery (Ed) and family and her dear friends Jackie and Keith McKay, Clara Munn, Doris Scott and Margaret Meggs.
A special thank you is extended to the wonderful staff at Telfer Place, Chaplin Foster and Dr Williams and especially Kelly who became Maimie’s new best friend.
Cremation has taken place. Interment to follow in Paris cemetery.
A memorial gathering will be held at Teller Place in mid June 2016.
Donations in Mamie's memory may be made to Salvation Army.
