Jeffery Collier, Mary Elizabeth B.A. M.A. Ph.d.
Passed away Wednesday February 24, 2016 at Stedman Community Hospice/Hankinson House, Brantford, Ontario in her 96th year. Mary will be missed by her extended family, her close circle of neighbours, dear friends and dedicated care givers. Mary was predeceased by her mother Alice Maude Vivien MacLaurin and her father Dr. Frederick Herbert Jeffery. Known to her close friends as “Jeff” Mary was a long-time resident of Paris leaving town to attend Queen’s University in Kingston graduating with her B.A. 1942 then enrolling at Radcliffe College- Cambridge, Massachusetts - where she obtained her M.A. 1943. She subsequently attended the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Minnesota where she graduated with her Ph.D. in Psychology with a minor in Psychiatry - 1946. Mary taught for a number of years in the United States including the University of Minnesota, Indiana University, Louisiana State University and upon her return to Canada at the University of Western Ontario. Mary also did post-doctoral work in Chicago at Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute, Michael Reese Hospital, the University of Chicago and the Institute for Psychoanalysis.
Mary was an exceptional student and faculty at a time in world history that was marked by unprecedented social change. She loved the study, the work, the associations and life in general on both sides of the 49th parallel coming home to Paris regularly and retiring early in 1971 to care for her terminally ill mother Maude.
Mary’s love for Paris was self-evident in all she did evidence by her unwavering support and concern for the community and for the many persons whose lives she touched.
In accordance with Mary’s wishes a private funeral has taken place with internment at the family plot - Paris Cemetery. It was Mary’s wish that any mourning felt by others be expressed privately and individually.
Special thanks to Dr. McDonald, Dr. McNeil, Shelley and the palliative outreach team, the staff and volunteers at Hankinson House; to the nurses and staff at CCAC; to the amazing team of private care givers, Leslie, Maureen, Hennie, Cecilia, Anna and Andrea; to Reverend Barb Fullerton, Reverend John McPhail; to close confidents Susan, Tom and Rick… and to all those who knew, supported and loved Mary.
