Obituary for Winifred Spencer

SPENCER, Winifred – The family of Winifred Spencer (née Smith), in her 95th year, announce her peaceful passing surrounded by her family on March 2, 2017.
Beloved wife of the late Norman (1980). Companion to the late Bill Mitchell (2009). Loving mother of Stuart, and Andrew (Jennifer), and “Nannie” to Matthew (Kristi), and Sarah. Great Grandmother of Bergen and Erica. Predeceased by eldest son David (1968).
“Winnie” was born in Stoke-upon-Trent, England, and served in the Woman’s Royal Naval Service during WWII. She met Norman when he was stationed overseas, and came to Canada as a War Bride in 1944. She and Norman raised 3 sons, in Montreal, Otterburn Park and later in London. She also enjoyed the family’s vacation property in “The Spinney” north of Montreal.
Mom was a very giving person and sacrificed so much for her family, always putting her children first. She was recognized by her friends as someone you could count on and trust.
Mom was a proud “Wren” and member of the London chapter of the Royal Canadian Naval Association, and the Naval Officers’ Association of Canada. She enjoyed travel, entertaining, and above all else she loved her family, and her extended family.
Mom, thanks for all you accomplished, and the love you showed to all of us.
We love you, we miss you, and we will be reunited.
Interment at Woodland Cemetery, London Ontario, March 6, at 3:30 pm.
The family wishes to thank the many doctors and nurses at the Brantford General Hospital, for all the care they took with Mom during her stay.
Friends who wish to make a donation in memory of Winnie are asked to consider the Heart and Stroke Society.
