Gone Fishin'

Those who knew Fred Peebles best knew he loved a good prank. Here's one he played on me at his retirement home in Campbellford.....

When my cousins and I were young we often would go down to visit our grandparents for a week in the summer. My favourite activity with my grandfather in the summertime was fishing and exploring the Trent river and canal system. I remember bugging Grandpa to take me fishing one morning, he wasn't up for it. I made a nuisance of myself until he sent me over to his neighbor Dr. Sam who had a boy about my age for me to play with. Dr. Sam's house was awesome as it had an indoor pool, ping pong, etc. I must have been whining about my grandfather not taking me fishing because after I got home Grandpa asked me if I wanted to go back out for a fishing trip with Dr. Sam and his son. I was ecstatic : ) So away I went, hopped into Dr. Sam's car anticipating my next big catch. I asked where we were going? Fishing! was all I got. Dr. Sam's car pulled into the parking lot of the local grocery store, what were we doing here I wondered. Fishing! was the only answer I got... must be here to buy bait. We walked to the deli and meat department, and I watched in confusion as Dr. Sam spent some time eyeballing the assortment of fillets set out for the customers. Again I asked what we were doing here? fishing! I was told. This ways much faster! You see Dr. Sam and his son were Oriental and I thought I was going to be let in on some ancient oriental fishing techniques... instead I got my first lesson in stereotype let down. When I got home, Grandpa asked how my fishing trip was with a chuckle. Didn't even occur to me until that moment that he was in on the prank the whole time. I'll miss him.
